Zayn Malik - born Zain Javadd Malik - is an English singer from
the boyband One Direction. He was born to an English mother and a
British Pakistani father in Bradford, where he was raised with
three sisters. "I was a bit of a handful when I was a kid because I
was quite hyperactive. Even in the house my mum used to put me in
my pram because I was so full-on," he said of his childhood. In
2010, he auditioned for The X Factor, and was almost
eliminated during the bootcamp stages of the competition when he
refused to dance. He failed to qualify for the 'Boys' category, but
was later bought back as part of a group formed by Simon Cowell -
One Direction. Since then, the band have gone on to become one of
the most successful boybands of all time, making history in March
2012 when their debut album, Up All Night, scored a
Billboard chart No.1 - a world first for a British act overseas.
Zayn Malik hit the headlines in 2011, when it was revealed that he
was dating fellow X Factor contestant Rebecca Ferguson, who is six
years his senior. Their relationship ended in November 2011 after
four months together.
